Health Effects:
Ancient writings of the Romans show that they may have been aware that slaves working with asbestos were “becoming disabled to the point that they first could not exert themselves in their work, and then died as their breathing difficulties became severe.” Asbestos has been conclusively tied to cancers of the lung, colon, rectum, esophagus, and an asbestos-specific cancer of the lining or the lungs and intestines called mesothelioma. Asbestos is also the cause of “asbestosis” which is a debilitating fibrosis of the interior of the lung.
